Transitions

College is the perfect time to allow students more freedom and encourage them to become more independent. Students still have frequent contact with parents and other close family ties. It is important that the student can still be reliant on their family for support. This time is filled with excitement, joy, frustration, fear or sadness, and sometimes confusion for both the student and the parent. However, becoming independent adults is what students are striving for and what parents have been working toward for years. Everything you are going through is normal.

The parental role often changes from one in which the parents make a majority of the decisions, follow through with needed tasks, and take care of things for the student. Parents will need to intervene less, become a resource for information, and encourage students to make decisions on their own. Since parents have been so involved in their students’ lives, it is often difficult for parents to resist the temptation to do it for the student. Please resist, it will be best for your student in the long run. Summer Orientation & Registration Information
